On the ? day of Christmas
Help me out here. I can't figure out what day of Christmas today is for my countdown. Don't blame me, blame my mathematical learning disability.
Okay, so I know that Christmas is about the spirit of giving. But I think it's fun to remember the "what in the heck?" gifts too. Like, my "what in the heck?" gift was from my great-grandmother, Mamaw Sybill. I have a lot of memories of Mamaw Sybill, mostly of her peering out the back door and yelling "Kayla Aimee! Who is that little brown-headed girl and why is she running around in my backyard?!"
And I would patiently remind her that it was her great-grandaughter Lauren and that she was visiting too.
Mamaw Sybill was always passing off some trinket to me every time I visited. A box of buttons, a doilie, a prayer cloth she ordered from Binny Hinn. It had a picture of Jesus on it and it was made so that his eyes followed you wherever you were in the room. I think it was supposed to be comforting, but when I was 7 years old, it was the creepiest thing I'd ever seen.
So it was no surprise to me when I opened my Christmas gift from her the year I was 12. It was an adult XXL turtleneck...with pictures of other turtlenecks printed on it.
I wore it all day.
Because even though it was a horrible gift for a 12 year old girl, and even though she probably accidentally wrapped my Uncle Neal's gift and put my name on the box, I wanted to make her happy.
Because she always made me happy. And even though it was a "what in the heck?" gift, I've never forgotten it. And that's probably better than if I'd gotten that purse I'd asked for that I would have quickly forgotten through the years.
Mamaw taught me to crochet, so today enjoy this set of digital crocheted flowers. You can use them on your digital pages or print them out and use them on traditional pages. Tomorrow we'll be back to the Making Memories give-aways, but today I wanted to remember Mamaw Sybill.
